2018 Results

As a continuation of our ‘Race the Tide’ concept featuring 3 races, this will focus solely on one race, the traditional 8.5 mile Race The Light course, with two estuary crossings.

The Race itself is a shadowy 8.5 mile escapade, meandering through Flete Estates’ secret tracks and trails.. You’ll be crossing the estuary on the outward and return legs, so be prepared for wet feet and legs from the outset.

The start time for the race is 3pm (subject to change by a maximum of 15 minutes depending on weather and tidal conditions on Raceday).

The race starts on the sand, across the estuary and up into the woods. On your return you leave the woods to cross the estuary for the second time, up the slipway and continuing to the finish line at the Old Schoolhouse.

Many thanks for entering our race. With more races than we’ve ever done this year, we now bring you the renewal of our Twilight race, Race The Light…. However, we could not coincide the times of tides and the sunset for this year. Therefore, we have arranged a race across the Erme Estuary at midday.

LOCATION

The SchoolhouseDevon, Mothecombe, Holbeton, Plymouth, Devon. PL8 1LB

DIRECTIONS

Please use the above postcode to assist you turning off the A379 (Plymouth to Kingsbridge road) in the direction of Holbeton but later, instead of turning to Holbeton, continue following signs to Mothecombe, turning left (do not take a Sat Nav shortcut as we do not want to offend the locals that use a very narrow lane) about a mile later at Battisborough Cross, continuing along the road and down underneath a bridge. The carpark is 50 metres on your left. Raceday signage will also feature to make directions easy for you. Please allow plenty of time to arrive.

PARKING

Parking is free at the start/Finish location. Car sharing helps the environment and will also help us on the day as the parking is on grass, in a large field. Please do not park on any roads as this may hinder emergency vehicles access.

REGISTRATION

Registration is 9:30 to 11:45am at the SchoolhouseDevon just yards from the car parking and where you collect your race number, safety pins and t-shirt or other pureTrail merchandise, if you’ve paid in advance. Race numbers are to be worn on your front to make it possible to accurately record the results.

START TIME

Midday is our goal starting time but this could change by 1/4 hour depending on water levels in the Estuary on Raceday. We ask you all to register in good time on the day. An updated email will be sent a few days prior to Raceday.

REFRESHMENTS and TOILET facilities

Food and drinks will be available before, during and after the race from the SchoolhouseDevon. You can book a table by emailing dinnerlady@schoolhouse-devon.com or phoning 01752830552. Toilets are located on both sides of the building.

WEATHER

It’s December so expect it to be cold and wet so you might want to bring hat and gloves.

SHOES

It will be wet, muddy and with plenty of tree branches to negotiate. Your feet and shoes are guaranteed to get wet (because of the initial Estuary crossing) and muddy as the route up the estuary never fully dries. Trail shoes are compulsory for the Race.

THE COURSE

The routes are all fully marked with tape/reflective tape, lights and directional arrows. Marshals will be located at key junctions where some runners will meet front runners coming towards them. With this in mind, please stay to the left side of the trails at all times to avoid a collision.

There are 3 sections involving 200 metres stretches of tarmac where cars could be on the road so please take care. A marshal will be nearby to warn you and motorists.

Printed maps will be at Registration. If the water levels are as high as last year we will look at shortening the course by 1/2 mile in order to get all runners back across the Estuary.

The start of the race involves a short walk to the beach and starts with an Estuary Crossing. The finish is at the Schoolhouse (up the hill)!

No dogs are allowed to run with their owner in the races due to UK Athletics rules and their Public Liability Insurance, which differs to Park Runs.

Please note that there will be qualified Paramedics and First Aiders in attendance.

CHECKPOINT – Approximately 4.0 miles

Food including jellied sweets, peanuts, water and coke will be available in Deer Park Wood

CUTOFFS

The sweeper will monitor the progress and speak to runners to see how they respond to ensure their safety, but our intention will be to guide all runners across the Estuary. We would expect all runners to be past the 8 miles, by 2:15pm (in 2 hours 15 minutes).

MANDATORY REQUIREMENTS

Trail running shoes – the route starts with getting wet feet and continues in wet and muddy conditions and then you cross the Estuary again!

Plastic Cups – Since our Lundy Island Race in 2018, we have gone cupless. Anyone wanting single amounts of water or coke should bring a separate cup which can be re-used at the Aid Station. We will provide top-up of bottles, soft flasks and backpack bladders.

Should anyone withdraw from the race you MUST report to a marshal who will assist you and remove you race number to inform the Registration Team.

SUPPORTING LOCATIONS

Because the race includes 2 Estuary crossings it is difficult to view the runners anywhere else but the beach. Our suggestion is to go down to the beach (which is the start location and just 300m from the car park/finish. A great place for kids to play but bring a headtorch as there will be little or no light on the beach as twilight arrives.

THE FINISH

The first two male and female runners in each race will receive a bespoke trophy and a presentation will be arranged soon after. Age category winners will receive a discount voucher emailed a few days following Raceday.

Unfortunately we cannot provide any private changing facilities. Your car will be the only option…..
